Sachin Tendulkar's search for his elusive 100th international century fittingly

Sydney, January  1 (AFP): Sachin Tendulkar's search for his elusive 100th international century fittingly takes him to the Sydney Cricket Ground for Tuesday's second Test against Australia, an arena celebrating its own Test ton.

Tendulkar has been stranded on 99 Test and one-day international centuries since March.

The "Little Master" came close to achieving the unique feat with his fluent 73 in the first innings of last week's Melbourne Test, where India succumbed to a 122-run defeat.

But the SCG, hosting its 100th Test, is one of 38-year-old Tendulkar's happy hunting grounds. He has scored three of his 51 Test hundreds there in seven innings and averages an incredible 221.33 at the ground.

Tendulkar has been stranded on 99 Test and one-day international centuries since scoring 111 against South Africa in the World Cup in March, but the odds are stacked in his favour in Sydney this week.

"You really think cosmos, the Almighty and the Hindu gods were going to allow him to score it (100th ton) anywhere but the SCG?" SCG Trust chairman Rodney Cavalier said in half-jest. "These things are preordained."

Tendulkar's returns at the SCG make for a compelling argument: 148 not out (1992), 241 not out (2004) and 154 not out (2008).

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly said that based on Tendulkar's batting form in Melbourne he is "guaranteed" to get his missing century in Australia.

"He looked very solid at the MCG on a pitch which had a fair bit of help for the quicks. His feet have moved superbly, which is an indication that his mind is thinking the right way," Ganguly said.

"I can guarantee you that if he keeps batting like this he will make a major impact on the remaining three Tests and probably get past that magic landmark in this country."

V.V.S. Laxman, one of India's batting failures in Melbourne, is looking forward with relish to playing at the SCG, which statistically is his most productive scoring venue outside of India.

In five Test innings at the ground he has scored three hundreds and averages 96.20, a far cry from his desultory two and one last week at the MCG.

But for all of the runs from Tendulkar and Laxman, India have only won one of nine previous Tests at the ground and they cannot afford to fall 2-0 behind in the four-Test series.

Australia's pace trio, James Pattinson, Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus, took 19 of the 20 Indian wickets in Melbourne and helped rout the tourists for 169 in the second innings to bring off an emphatic win inside four days.

Ricky Ponting, who was the best performing Australian batsman with 62 and 60 in Melbourne, has scored the most Test runs at the SCG with 1,346 at 64.10, including five centuries.

England scored three centuries in their innings thrashing of Australia at the SCG a year ago and while spinners had a minimal effect on that outcome, the signs are that there will be more spin this week.

"Just from walking across the ground it looks a lot less green than it has been the last few years," senior Australian batsman Mike Hussey said on Sunday.

"The last few years have been really seamer-friendly and there's been overhead conditions to help that as well, but it (now) looks definitely a lighter colour and generally it has slowed down a little bit and helped the spinners as the game's gone on," he said.

Squads
Australia: Michael Clarke (capt), Brad Haddin, Ed Cowan, Ryan Harris, Ben Hilfenhaus, Michael Hussey, Nathan Lyon, Shaun Marsh, James Pattinson, Ricky Ponting, Peter Siddle, David Warner.
India: Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, V.V.S. Laxman, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni (capt), Ravichandran Ashwin, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Pragyan Ojha.

Yuvraj to be fit for Australia tri-series

Yuvraj to be fit for Australia tri-series

I have completely recovered and have been training for last two weeks. There is absolutely no problem with my fitness, Yuvraj said.

New Delhi, (AFP): India's one-day specialist Yuvraj Singh said on Friday he would be fit for next month's tri-series in Australia after recovering from a non-malignant lung tumour.

"I have completely recovered and have been training for last two weeks. There is absolutely no problem with my fitness," the all-rounder said.

"I am able to run hard and my lung capacity is back. The trainers and the support staff at the National Cricket Academy have been working hard on my fitness. In a week, I will be completely ready."

His family revealed in November that the all-rounder had been battling a golf-ball sized non-malignant lung tumour which first affected him during India's triumphant World Cup campaign.

Yuvraj, 30, was declared man of the tournament after the World Cup win at home in April for scoring 362 runs and grabbing 15 wickets in nine matches.

The World Cup star played in two of the three home Tests against the West Indies in November but was not picked for the ongoing four-Test series in Australia.

India will play two Twenty20 matches against Australia before the triangular one-day series, also featuring Sri Lanka, starts in Melbourne in February.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's Indians are currently trailing 2-0 in the Test series, but Yuvraj said they could bounce back.

"Virender Sehwag has struggled to give good starts. But I am hopeful that the team will stage a fightback. You also have to give credit to the Aussies -- the way they have played in the series so far."

Ponting's work ethic is second to none: Shastri

Ponting's work ethic is second to none: Shastri

I expected Ponting to score two hundreds, Shastri said and added he's already got one (134) and could end the series with at least 400 runs against his name.

Sydney (The Telegraph): Former India captain Ravi Shastri spoke to The Telegraph at the SCG on Wednesday afternoon. The one-on-one was limited to Ricky Ponting, who completed his 40th Test hundred during the day.

The following are excerpts:

Q: Ponting had been under enormous pressure, courtesy the media, before this series began. How did you expect him to respond?

A: I expected Ponting to score two hundreds. He's already got one (134) and could end the series with at least 400 runs against his name.

What gave you the confidence?

Simply because Ponting was due for a big one... He hadn't got a hundred for two years and, if you look at the scorecards, you'll see that he either got out early or after a half-century... For Ponting, it was all about getting in and staying there... He looked good in both innings (62, 60) at the MCG and carried on from there. The signs had, indeed, been ominous in the first Test.

For the entire series...

Absolutely.

Did we have the right strategy to get Ponting out late on the afternoon of Day I here?

From the beginning, Ponting didn't put a foot wrong. Moreover, one saw the determination, of wanting to end the drought.

Your take on this hundred of Ponting...

Ponting wasn't at his dashing or flamboyant best, but he didn't look in any trouble either... You've got to remember that he hadn't got a hundred for two years and, so, wanted to make the most of the start.

Where does Ponting stand vis-a-vis the other greats still playing the game — Sachin Tendulkar and Jacques Kallis?

Sachin will be No.1 because of longevity... Ponting has been a daring batsman... Very few pull and hook off the front foot as he does... I haven't seen that regularly from anybody else after (Sir) Viv Richards... At his peak, in conditions where the ball did something, Ponting registered terrific hundreds... There was a time when he got runs at will.

Sachin's No.1, but who is the No.2?

Both Ponting and Kallis are great batsmen, but in his prime, Ponting dominated attacks... Not so much Kallis. However, if you also look at the wickets taken by Kallis, then he'll be the No.1 cricketer of the past decade.

Do our 35-plus batsmen have something to learn from Ponting?

Look, the attacks have been different... Our batsmen have faced one attack, Ponting has been facing another. Our batsmen have faced 150 kmph bowlers who're at them all the time. It has been different for Ponting.

Is there something others need to take away from the way Ponting has responded to calls for his retirement/removal?

That hard work is a must... Look at Ponting's work ethic. His work ethic is second to none, the way he works out at nets.

The final one... Shouldn't greats be allowed the luxury of choosing when to call it a day?

I wouldn't say luxury... Greats know when to leave... Who knows, if Ponting goes on to have an exceptional series, he may then decide to call it a day.
